Host and partner institution : CYPRES is a centre for research and creation in art, science and new technologies in the framework of European projects. It welcomes artists with a project or willing to deepen their practice in the field of media art : sound, image, Internet, CD-ROM, etc. CYPRES cooperates with art schools and universities where internships are conceivable during the duration of the residency.
Working/living conditions : the place of work is in the premises of CYPRES who provides the laureate with computers, video production and post-production equipment, high-speed Internet connection, image (2D, 3D) and sound processing software. Accommodation at La Friche de Belle de Mai, Marseille, single room in shared flat. The laureate has to present its work and project at the beginning of the residency but is not obliged to finalise it during the residency. The institution encourages exchanges with the local artists and institutions and facilitates as well lectures and visits.
Nature of bursary : financial support of US$ 5,000 to cover the fare of the return ticket as well as living expenses. The laureate must provide his/her own health insurance and food.
Dates of residency : to be fixed by mutual agreement between September 2005 and March 2006.
Eligibility : artists with a specific project in the field of media arts, or motivated by the use of new technologies.

ARAPUCA consists in three experimental projects : the Upokrinomenologic Aberrations, the Stimutalogists / Electricfish, the Chromatologists /Chromatologic Bestiary.
The "Upokrinomenologic Aberrations" project find its process through an alternative to the Artificial Life. Until now, several researches have been trying to elaborate the conditions of the artificiality of a life, looking like it, trough the modeling of cellular automatons, genetic algorithms, collective intelligence, dynamic morphogenesis, robotic, without nevertheless being able to escape the biomimetic conditions of the earthbound surrounding.
Beginning with the inherent laws of a defined reality, it becomes possible to model non trivial situations, in which the multiple activities of the living can develop according to twisted parameters, over the frequent adaptive and co-adaptive situations. Factors like gravity, pressure, temperature, humidity, viscosity, density, luminance... by modulating, crossing, interconnecting, twisting their parameters, can become operators producing deciding consequences on the morphogenesis, the behaviors, the technozoosemiotic modes of communication.
Then a non-cooperative modeling of virtual environments and universes can generate a strategy to avoid the constraints of the ordinary and introduce new artistic dimensions. More precisely, a distorted zoology can come to the fore out of a form of rebel artificial life, in the unexpected of the programmed causal chains of the living and the opening of original epistemologic and esthetic categories.
Stimutalogists/Electric fish project is an interactive device which consists in capturing the communications of electric fishes from the Mormyrids and the Gymnarchids family. The Mormyforms and the Gymnotids have worked out a system of communication by electric signals well-superior, as regard of their environment, to the visual, acoustic, and mecanic signals. The conduct of the electric signals and their fading allow a fast transmission of the messages. The Gnathonemus Petersii use of its outputs is a unique detection system in the living world of the Electrolocation. With these electric signals, it has elaborated a real social communication system.
The project carries on two kind of experiences, possibly interconnected : 1- Logonathe Artefact (interactive loop of communication beetween living, artefact, conversational agents, of which parameters can be diversely defined) 2-Logomorphogenesis (modeling by dynamic morphogenesis of informations exchanges beetween 3 Gnathonemus Pertersii)
"The Chromatologists" project aims to work out computer interfaces and technologic interactive devices that allow to establish with the cephalopodes the first dialogues animal/machine/man, by a dermic communication (chromatophor). In another stage, it mean to use the mimetic assignment of camouflage in order to constitute a similar cloak-room for different organisms and models.
These communications by dermic display are the objects of serial artistic and scientist experiences. In specific phylogenetic stages, the cephalopodes have already shown a certain form of self-sufficiency through innovative and anarchic digressions. They freed themselves by absorbing the shell that kept them for centuries in the dark world of opacity, and then became a invertebrate vertebrate. Opalescent and gauzy, they open a world of dermic communication by chromatophores and bioluminescent dermic organs. Conscientious zoosystemicians and teuthologists claim that these poikiloligoid aberrations result of zoosemiotic conflicts. They consider that their are facing one of the distinctive phase of a upokrinomenologic strategy. It is possible indeed that these teuthoids have reached a threshold of operative communicability clearly more limited than the complexity of the messages they expect sending. That’s why they develop on one side morphoprophasismes, which means a serie of tricky and random activities, generating aberrational morphogenesis, and on the other side the processing of chromatophoric and bioluminescent codes in order to constitute the bases of a stereo-rheomatic.

ARAPUCA se compose de trois projets expérimentaux : les Aberrations upokrinoménologiques, Les Stimutalogues/ Electricfish, Les CHROMATOLOGUES / Bestiaire Chromatophorique.
Le projet “Aberrations Upokrinoménologiques” trouve son développement dans une alternative à la Vie Artificielle. Jusqu’à ce jour, de nombreuses recherches se sont développées en tentant d’élaborer les conditions de l’artificialité d’une vie telle qu’elle est, à travers des modélisations d’automates cellulaires, d’algorithmes génétiques, d’intelligence collective, de morphogenèses dynamiques, de robotique, sans pouvoir échapper, pour autant, aux conditions biomimétiques du milieu terrestre ambiant.
En partant de lois inhérentes à une réalité donnée, il devient possible de modéliser des situations non triviales, dans lesquels les activités multiples du vivant se développent selon des paramètres pervertis, en débordant les situations adaptatives et co-adaptatives courantes. Des facteurs comme, la pesanteur, la pression, la température, l’humidité, la viscosité, la densité, la luminosité... peuvent par des paramétrages variables, croisés, interconnectés et déviants, devenir des opérateurs produisant des conséquences déterminantes sur les morphogenèses, les comportements, les modes de communication technozoosémiotiques...
Ainsi une modélisation “récalcitrante” des milieux ou des univers virtuels, peut donc être une stratégie pour échapper aux contraintes de l’ordinaire et introduire de nouvelles dimensions artistiques. Plus précisément, une forme de vie artificielle rebelle, peut ainsi faire émerger une zoologie biaisée, dans l’inattendue des chaînes causales programmées du vivant en ouvrant des catégories épistémologiques et esthétiques inédites.
Le projet Stimutalogues/EletricFish est un dispositif interactif qui consiste à capter les communications des poissons électriques de la famille des Mormyridées et des Gymnarchidées. Les Mormyriformes et les Gymnotidés ont élaboré un système de communication par signaux électriques bien supérieurs en fonction de leur milieu aux signaux visuels, acoustiques et mécaniques. La conduction des signaux électriques et leur effacement permettent la transmission rapide de messages. Le Gnathonemus Petersii utilise ses décharges dans un système de détection unique dans le monde vivant l’Electrolocation. Il a élaboré, grâce à des signaux électriques un véritable système de communication sociale.
Il est composé de deux types d’expériences interconnectables :
1. Logognathe Artefact (boucle interactive paramétrables de communication entre vivant, artefact et agent conversationnel) 2. Logomorphogénèse (modélisation par morphogenèse dynamique d’échanges d’informations entre 3 Gnathonemus Petersii)
Le projet “Les CHROMATOLOGUES” se donne pour objectif l’élaboration d’interfaces informatiques et de dispositifs technologiques interactifs permettant d’établir avec des céphalopodes les premiers dialogues animal/machine/homme, par communication dermique (chromatophores). Dans une autre phase il entend utiliser les fonctions mimétiques de camouflage des céphalopodes pour constituer un vestiaire interchangeable entre différents organismes et des modélisations.
Ces communications par affichage dermiques sont l’objet d’une série d’expériences artistiques et scientifiques. Les céphalopodes ont déjà montré dans certaines phases phylogénétiques, une certaine forme d’indépendance par des écarts novateurs et anarchiques. Ils se sont affranchis en absorbant leur coquille qui les avait maintenu durant des siècles dans l’univers sombre de l’opacité, pour devenir un invertébré vertébré. Opalescent et translucide, ils se sont ouverts au monde de la communication dermique par des chromatophores et des organes dermiques bioluminescents. Les zoosystémiciens et teuthologues consciencieux, affirment que ces aberrations poikiloligoides résultent de conflits zoosémiotiques. Ils considèrent qu’ils sont face à une des phases caractéristiques stratégie upokrinoménologique. Il est possible, en effet, que ces Teuthoïdés aient atteint un seuil de communicabilité opératoire nettement plus limité que la complexité des messages qu’ils entendent émettre. C’est pour cela qu’il développe d’une part des morphoprophasismes, c’est à dire une série d’activités rusées et aléatoires, générant des morphogenèses aberrationnelles et d’autre part l’élaboration de codes chromatophoriques et bioluminescents afin de constituer les bases d’un langage stéréo-rhéomatique.

The conference aims to enquire into the major mutations that are impinging on the future of our world, on the evolution of human beings and the societies they constitute and consequently on human modes of knowledge, expression and communication. It intends to rely on the convergences and interactions presently being proposed by artistic, scientific and technological practices in order to foster imaginative experiments as well as visionary, anticipatory and symbolic activities.
MutaMorphosis tends to become an effective tool for analysis and action based on a multiplication of perspectives and the quality and the diversity of the conference’s participants-artists, scientists, engineers, researchers, theoreticians-as well as the pertinence of the themes that will be discussed. In particular, the conference will concentrate on the growing interest the worlds of the arts, sciences and technologies are showing in EXTREME AND HOSTILE MILIEUS. These milieus appear as symptomatic indicators of the mutations that are taking place, as potential vectors that make possible an awareness of the different problems that are at the origin of the disturbances that threaten the ensemble of the Earth’s eco-systemic balances.

CYPRES, since its creation in 1992, axis its reflexions and work on the exploration of the relations arts/sciences/technologies, and more particularly on the technological and artistic projections in direction of the person suffering from a physical, mental or social disability. The meeting with Louise Poissant* and her team at the time of manifestations such as Interfaces and sensoriality (2003) and Arts and Biotechnologies (2004), reveals the urgency to treat the problems of deficiency in its forms the most varied like one of the factors major in the inventiveness and the creativity of the means of substitution which are exerted in many fields : medicine, therapeuticy, technology, robotic, but also communication, cognition and art.
It seems important to evaluate the contributions of technologies and biotechnologies on the conditions of viability, autonomy and incapacity of the human beings and to observe the signs of new evolutions which would testify to the widening of their cognitive, mental, imaginary and symbolic capacities.
Mobile Immobilisé project proposes, at the time of meetings and workshops, to wonder about these new technological specific cultures, by joining together many scientific and technological researches undertaken in direction of the disability and the artistic experiments, using concepts and average analogues, treating of the same whole of problems and objectives, like those of virtual realities, the interactive devices, of the sound, linguistic, gestural and iconic expressions.
The meeting of these fields then generates several topics of reflexion as diversified as innumerable and the artistic experiments are posed then like a complementary and essential interrogation in the field of the expression (Multimodality, Behavior, Instrumentality and access machine, culture), of the communication (knowledge, sensoriality, cognition), in the field of the experimentation (construction of tools) and in the field therapeutic (support with the care).
In addition to the objective to stress the importance of the complementarity of research in direction of the world of deficiency, Mobile Immobilisé makes a point of showing that the artistic practices are not confined in the medium of art with properly spoken, but that there is a true appropriation of the current company, by artists carrying out of the reflexions as well to the technological, biotechnological plan, as on the political, economic, ecological and ethical level.
* The majority of research of Louise Poissant revolve around the Group of research in media arts which it directs since her foundation in 1989. The GRAM concentrates its research on the effect of new technologies in the field of art and the culture in general. " We work tools which in their turn work us " McLuhan said. This reflexion nourishes the research undertaken to the GRAM. Processes, techniques, instruments, critical and aesthetic concepts, finally a whole culture emerges from this immense workshop-laboratory which are media arts. The analysis of all these practices aims at determining the parameters of new forms of sensoriality and tries to say what is yet only experimental and, to many regards, in search of identity.

CYPRES, depuis sa création en 1992, axe ses réflexions et travaux sur l’exploration des relations arts/sciences/technologies, et plus particulièrement sur les avancées technologiques et artistiques en direction de la personne souffrant d’un handicap physique, mental ou social. La rencontre avec Louise Poissant* et son équipe lors de manifestations telles que Interfaces et sensorialité (2003) et Arts et Biotechnologies (2004), fait apparaître l’urgence de traiter la problématique de la déficience sous ses formes les plus variées comme l’un des facteurs majeur dans l’inventivité et dans la créativité des moyens de substitution et de suppléance qui s’exercent dans de nombreux domaines : médical, thérapeutique, technologique, robotique, mais aussi communicationnel, cognitif, artistique.
Il nous semble important d’évaluer les apports des technologies et des biotechnologies sur les conditions de viabilité, d’autonomie et d’incapacité des êtres humains et d’observer les signes de nouvelles évolutions qui témoigneraient de l’élargissement de leurs capacités cognitives, mentales, imaginaires et symboliques.
Le projet Mobile Immobilisé propose, lors de rencontres et d’ateliers, de s’interroger sur ces nouvelles cultures spécifiques technologiques, en réunissant les nombreuses recherches scientifiques et technologiques menées en direction du handicap et les expériences artistiques, utilisant des concepts et des moyens analogues, traitant d’un même ensemble de problématiques et d’objectifs, comme ceux des réalités virtuelles, des dispositifs interactifs, des expressions sonores, langagières, gestuelles et iconiques.
La rencontre de ces domaines engendre alors plusieurs thèmes de réflexion aussi diversifiés qu’innombrables et les expériences artistiques se posent alors comme une interrogation complémentaire et essentielle dans le domaine de l’expression (Multimodalité, Comportement, Instrumentalité et accès machine, culture), de la communication (connaissance, sensorialité, cognition), dans le domaine de l’expérimentation (construction d’outils) et dans le domaine thérapeutiques (support aux soins).
Outre l’objectif de souligner l’importance de la complémentarité des recherches en direction du monde de la déficience, Mobile Immobilisé tient à montrer que les pratiques artistiques ne se cantonnent pas au milieu de l’art à proprement parlé, mais qu’il existe une véritable appropriation de la société actuelle, par des artistes menant des réflexions tant au plan technologique, biotechnologique, qu’au plan politique, économique, écologique et éthique.
*La plupart des recherches de Louise Poissant gravitent autour du Groupe de recherche en arts médiatiques qu’elle dirige depuis sa fondation en 1989. Le GRAM concentre ses recherches sur l’effet des nouvelles technologies dans le domaine de l’art et de la culture en général. " Nous façonnons des outils qui à leur tour nous façonnent " disait McLuhan. Cette réflexion nourrit les recherches menées au GRAM. Des procédés, des techniques, des instruments, des concepts critiques et esthétiques, enfin toute une culture émerge de cet immense atelier-laboratoire que sont les arts médiatiques. L’analyse de toutes ces pratiques vise à cerner les paramètres de nouvelles formes de sensorialité et tente de dire ce qui n’est encore qu’expérimental et, à bien des égards, en quête d’identité.

Cette rencontre vise à s’interroger sur les mutations fondamentales que connait la planète, sur l’évolution des êtres humains et des sociétés qu’ils constituent, mais aussi sur les moyens de connaissance, d’expression et de communication. Elle soulignera les convergences et les interactions proposées par l’art, la science et les pratiques technologiques, dans le but d’encourager les expérimentations imaginatives, visionnaires,anticipatoires et symboliques.
Mutamorphosis entend devenir un outil effectif dans les analyses et les actions, basées sur la multiplication des perspectives et sur la diversité et la qualité des particpants - artistes, scientifiques, informaticiens, chercheurs, théoriciens- mais aussi par la pertinence des thèmes abordés. Et notamment, elle se focalisera sur l’intérêt croissant du monde de l’art, des sciences et des technologies, pour les milieux extrèmes et hostiles. Ces millieux apparaissent comme des indicateurs symptomatiques de smutations qui se mettent en place, comme des vecteurs potentiels rendant possible la sensibilisation à différents problèmes qui sont à l’origine des perturbations des balances éco-systèmiques de la planète.

Le projet européen ALTERNE, développé dans le cadre de la Commission RDT - IST (Innovations Scientifiques et Technologiques), se terminera en février 2005. ARAPUCA, élaboré par CYPRES, se compose de trois projets expérimentaux, qui sont en phase de finalisation : les Aberrations Upokrinoménologiques, Les Stimutalogues/ Electricfish, Les CHROMATOLOGUES / Bestiaire Chromatophorique.
Ces projets s’inscrivent au coeur des orientations générales et aux différents niveaux spécifiques du projet ALTERNE dans les axes de recherche s’appuyant sur une réalité alternative à travers la physique qualitative et dans l’élaboration et l’utilisation d’une plate-forme virtuelle, comme produit de la convergence des technologies numériques et de leurs utilisations en terme de modélisations tridimensionnelles, d’interactivité, d’immersion dans des mondes virtuels et des réalités mixtes, dans les connexions en réseaux...
